Executive Summary
The Health Technology Board for Scotland (HTBS) has today (October 10 2002) issued the final protocol for the assessment of routine ultrasound testing in the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. The assessment will address the issues related to offering only a first trimester "booking" scan, only a second trimester "anomaly" scan or a combination of both. It will also assess the routine use of transvaginal scanning in pregnancy and the benefits of routinely using Doppler ultrasound during early pregnancy. The consultation on the draft protocol ended on September 20 2002; the assessment is due to be completed by December 2003 (see Clinica No 1024, p 7).
