NICE has launched a second consultation on the routine use of preoperative tests before elective surgery. The tests covered by the guidelines are chest X-ray, ECG, full blood count, haemostasis, renal function, random glucose, urine analysis, and blood gases and lung function (applicable to patients of American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grades 2 and 3). The recommendations are presented in sets of tables representing consensus opinion for an ASA grade, a type of comorbidity and a grade of surgery. The consultation on the technology ends on October 21 2002; guidance is due to be published in December.
