UK home dialysis move to boost expansion

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Last week's recommendation by the UK's National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) that all suitable patients with end-stage renal failure (ESRF) be given the option of receiving haemodialysis at home is expected to result in a shift of 10-15% of patients to this service. Renal services in England and Wales will need to expand to meet this demand, says NICE. The majority of renal units in England already offer a home haemodialysis service, but uptake levels vary widely and only a small number of centres have up to 15% uptake. A move towards this would release resources for patients who are unsuitable for home dialysis.
