Executive Summary
Scottish health minister Malcolm Chisholm has renewed his pledge to tackle hospital-acquired infection (HAI) as a matter of priority. He was speaking at this week's fifth international conference of the Hospital Infection Society (HIS) in Edinburgh. Reusable device sterilisation is one of the leading topics of a forthcoming policy document, based on the conclusions of an international HAI convention hosted by the Scottish Executive in June 2002. It is due to be published soon, a spokesperson told Clinica. An interim report on controlling HAI, which is thought to account for some 5,000 of the 70,000 deaths associated with infection in Scotland every year, was published in April 2002.
