Executive Summary
The fifth patient to receive Abiomed's implantable Abiocor artificial heart died last week following a stroke, almost ten months after receiving the device. The patient was reported to have been progressing well prior to the stroke, reported surgeons at Hahnemann University Hospital and Drexel University College of Medicine. Only one of the original seven patients to receive the device to date remains alive, said Danvers, Massachusetts-based Abiomed, which added that further implantations are imminent.
