Executive Summary
The UK Medical Devices Agency (MDA) has stopped short of recalling cochlear implants in an update of advice it has issued on the potential risk of bacterial meningitis among implantees (see Clinica No 1019, p 6). In the belief that a link to device sterility is "most unlikely", it has instead recommended that implant surgery only be performed when the patient has been suitably protected through vaccination.
