Executive Summary
The European Commission has increased by E22m ($21.5m) the funding allocated to fight HIV/AIDS in developing countries. Much of this will go improving access to, and the quality of, health services. The initiative is part of an EU drive to tackle poverty-related diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Developing countries account for some 95% of the estimated 40 million HIV-infected people worldwide and rising at a rate of 15,000 cases a day. Public health features high on the agenda of the EU's programme for sustainable development, which is the topic of a world summit, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 28-September 4 2002.
