False accounting claims are a myth, say German doctors

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Claims by the leading groups of the statutory health insurance funds that up to 20% of doctors receipts are fraudulent "have no foundation", says the federal association of statutory health insurance physicians (KBV). On the contrary, the number of fraudulent accounting practices by German doctors reported to the police has fallen dramatically over the past year, proving that the KBV has taken the issue seriously, says its deputy principal director, Andreas Kohler. Figures from the federal criminal department show that the number of cases reported fell from 17,368 cases in 2000 to 4,695 in 2001.
