Executive Summary
Research Councils UK has welcomed the government's pledge to increase the science budget to £2.9bn ($4.6bn) by 2005-06, as it prepares to discuss how the funding should be allocated. The budget (see Clinica No 1016, p 7) includes a £300m contribution to the £500m per annum capital fund for research infrastructure; additional funding is to be allocated to establishing large research facilities. Launched in May 2002, the RCUK comprises seven research councils, including the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils. The RCUK is due to publish details of the budget allocation in November.
