Executive Summary
Orthopaedic care in Austria will be in a state of collapse by the year 2010 unless efforts are made to drastically improve the situation, says the Austrian society for orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery. In a letter to federal chancellor Wolfgang Schussel, the society's president, Professor Reinhard Windhager, said that the rise in orthopaedic cases was directly linked to the ageing population. By 2030, Austria would have an additional one million people over the age of 60, he added.
