Executive Summary
The Austrian Standards Institute last week issued two standards aimed at improving the safety of patients and medical staff. The first concerns the hospital discharge of patients after radiotherapy. It sets out what level of radiation that can be safely emitted from a patient without harming other persons and is contained within part I of ONORM S 5275. A simple calculation method has been adopted in the standard, to determine the level of external emission of a patient. Exhalation of the patient, for radioactivity measurement purposes, is also taken into account.
