Bleak outlook for Norwegian cancer incidence

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Cancer incidence in Norway is set to increase dramatically over the next 20 years, statistics from a recent study by the Nordic cancer registries have revealed. The study, unveiled last week at the 18th UICC International Cancer Congress, shows that by 2020 the number of men contracting cancer in Norway will have rise by 42% and the number of women by 36%. This is viewed as a result of the ageing population. When diagnosed with cancer, two-thirds of Norwegian patients are over the age of 65. The study also revealed that the risk of contracting cancer increased by some 60% between 1958-1997.
