German health minister Ulla Schmidt has welcomed a move by the federal committee of doctors and sickness funds to approve colonoscopy as a reimbursable procedure for the prevention of intestinal cancer. "This new move means that those aged 56 and over will now be eligible for two colonoscopies," she said. Intestinal cancer is the second most prevalent form of cancer amongst women and the third amongst men in Germany. It is furthermore the second most common cause of death from cancer in Germany, with some 30,000 deaths each year.
