This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Ireland's Southern Health Board is preparing to tender for new A&E, day surgery and maternity facilities at Cork University Hospital, worth some E100 million ($88 million). The new A&E unit just approved by the ministry for health and children will include emergency X-ray facilities and treatment and resuscitation areas. The first phase of the new day surgery unit will include four operating theatres, patient accommodation and recovery areas. Cork University Hospital handled 60,000 casualty cases in 2001. The new Amalgamated Maternity Unit, with 150 obstetrics and pregnancy related gynaecology beds and 50 neonatal cots, is intended to replace the existing maternity and neonatal facilities currently provided in Cork at the St Finbarr's and Erinville hospitals. Construction work is due to commence by the end of summer 2002.
