This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

The seventh patient to receive Abiomed's implantable replacement heart, AbioCor, has died post-operatively despite the device functioning as expected, said the Danvers, Massachusetts firm. Surgeons who performed the operation at Jewish Hospital, Kentucky, commented that the patient was in a "severely debilitating preoperative condition" and required a ventilator prior to surgery. This implant is the seventh of 15 to be used in a trial of the device. Two AbioCor patients are still alive.
