Scotland co-ordinates major bowel cancer study:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Scotland's Edinburgh University has announced the launch of what it claims is the largest European study of bowel cancer. The Medical Research Council is funding the £1.4 million ($2 million) project, under which every newly diagnosed case in the 16-79 year age group in Scotland over the next two to three years - an estimated 4,000 patients - will be studied. Researchers will screen DNA and white blood cells to assess the genetic basis of bowel cancer. Patients will be followed both during hospitalisation and after discharge, comparing those with and without a family history of the disease in each age group.
