Executive Summary
A Japanese team has produced evidence to show that a cytokine called the Fas ligand may play a role in the development of heart attacks and other acute coronary syndromes. The researchers found that blood levels of the soluble form of Fas ligand were significantly higher upon hospital admission for patients with heart attacks and unstable angina compared with the control group. The study, led by Keisuke Fukuo, of Osaka University Medical School, appears in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (February 20).
