Executive Summary
The Scottish Executive has approved phase two of plans to replace the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow, with a new "multi-million pound, state-of-the-art facility" set to open in 2007. Phase one of the new cancer centre, based in Gartnavel, is already complete. Billed as "one of the finest cancer treatment centres in Europe", it will be equipped with 11 linear accelerators and new radiotherapy equipment. Provision will be made for further equipment expansion. The project is part of a £40 million ($57 million) cancer development plan launched in November 2001.
