Executive Summary
The third patient to receive Abiomed's AbioCor artificial heart has suffered a stroke, but is recovering well, said physicians from the Texas Heart Institute and St Luke's Episcopal Hospital said last week. Abiomed of Danvers, Massachusetts, said last month that it planned to modify the design of its fully implantable heart, as a question-mark hangs over one specific component that could potentially cause a stroke in human recipients (see Clinica No 994, p 21). Three of the five patients to receive the AbioCor heart to date have suffered strokes.
