Executive Summary

Spanish health minister Celia Villalobos has opened what is being billed as Europe's first "intelligent operating theatre", a unit offering computer-controlled minimally invasive trauma surgery. The unit is located in a new wing of Madrid's Hospital Santa Cristina, which is currently undergoing a Pta6.245 billion ($33.2 million) modernisation programme. So far, Pta410 million has been earmarked to equip the new wing, which will also specialise in endoscopic gynaecological surgery. New magnetic resonance imaging, ambulatory surgery, laboratory and research facilities, specialising in genetics and immunology, will be added to the wing.
