The state of California is launching a $3.9 million pilot programme to screen newborns for up to 30 genetic diseases. Drops of blood collected from the infant's heel will be analysed using tandem mass spectrometry equipment at the state laboratory. Participation in the expanded test will be optional and at no extra cost to the parent.
