Executive Summary
Spain has pledged renewed commitment to tackling Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, after a "great increase" in the incidence of neurological diseases in recent years. These diseases currently affect 400,000 and 120,000 people, respectively. So said health minister Ana Pastor recently, during comments to parliament on the progress of the new national centre/network for research into neurological diseases (CIEN). The network, which already comprises more than 200 research groups, has a first-year budget of E4m ($4.6m).
