Nordic centres of excellence to promote co-operation

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

With increased emphasis on biobanks, uniform high level national healthcare systems, improved diagnostic capabilities and population and epidemiological registries in the Nordic region, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland have decided to launch a Nordic Centre of Excellence Programme in molecular medicine. It is due to be set up by the Joint Committee of Nordic Medical Research Councils (NOS-M) and the Nordic Council of Ministers (NMR) with a view to enhancing intra-Nordic research contacts and making them more visible internationally. The programme is due to run from 2004-2009, with total funding amounting to DKr8m ($1.3m), with two or three centres selected in a two-stage open competition.
