Executive Summary
A study showing specific genetic changes in the brains of people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder could lead to a new diagnostic test for these diseases. Researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, report in The Lancet (September 6) that sufferers of the disorders exhibited reduced expression of key genes involved in producing brain cells called oligodendrocytes and myelin, the protein that insulates them. The findings also show that the two diseases may be more closely related than previously thought.
