Executive Summary
The French healthcare products safety agency, AFSSAPS, has issued recommendations for checking the helium gas quench sites on MRI systems. Similar action was taken just over a month ago by the medical devices section of the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (see Clinica No 1058, p9). It had advised that radiology directors should check with the supplier/installer of the external quench pipe that it had been designed and fitted correctly to the scanner manufacturer's specification. In Scotland, there had been two adverse incident reports where flaws in the MRI quench pipes could have resulted in serious injury or fatality to users and patients.
