The new generation of digital mobile phones interferes with many types of pacemakers, a report in Physics in Medicines and Biology has revealed. More recent pacemaker models use a ceramic filter which prevents this interference. However, the more traditional filters do not have the ability to filter out the very low frequency which the digital cellular phones. The result is that the pacemaker may confuse the GSM signals with those of the beating of the heart with potentially fatal results.
