The UK government has committed an extra £50m ($82m) to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and malaria until 2008. The UK has so far contributed £170m to the fund and more than £1.5bn to the development of health services generally in poor countries. UK funding of programmes to combat HIV/AIDS has increased from about £60m in 1998-99 to more than £250m in 2002-03.
