Executive Summary
In an effort to improve the diagnosis of cancer in the state of Victoria, the Australian federal health department has funded the installation a combined positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scanner at the Monash Medical Centre (MMC) in Moorabbin. The PET/CT scanner incorporates PET and CT technologies into a single device, allowing the collection of both anatomical and physiological information during a single examination. Data can then be viewed separately or superimposed on each other. Minister for health and aged care Senator Kay Patterson said that the new device would give many Australians access to this technology at minimal or not cost. The scanner will be managed by Australia's largest diagnostic imaging company, MIA Group, which will also gather information to assess the further expansion of PET funding.
