Executive Summary
Chile's largest provider of paediatric heart surgery, Salvecor, has opened its extended intensive care facilities. Salvecor's main cardiopathy clinic, in partnership with the Luis Calvo Mackenna hospital in Santiago, performs 70% of the country's paediatric heart surgery. 75% of Salvecor's activity is provided to families not covered by one of the national insurance programmes. Salvecor is a not-for-profit organisation. Chile's guaranteed healthcare services (AUGE) plan, piloted since August 2002, aims to provide 100% coverage for treatment of congenital cardiopathies, among other conditions. Cervical cancer and palliative care programmes were this week added to the AUGE plan (see issue No 1054, p 12).
