Executive Summary

Next month sees the creation of the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA), bringing together the Public Health Laboratory Service, the National Radiological Protection Board, the Centre for Applied Microbiology & Research and the National Focus for Chemical Incidents. The PHLS has expressed concerns that the reform could weaken the surveillance capacity of the NHS' network of laboratories (see Clinica No 1024, p 8).
