Executive Summary
The Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC), based in Port-of-Spain, in Trinidad and Tobago, is to receive $1.2m to improving epidemiological surveillance of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean region. The funds will be granted by the French government, under a four-year agreement signed with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which will co-ordinate work to optimise resources. The Caribbean has the world's second-highest prevalence of HIV infection, after sub-Saharan Africa, averaging at over 2% of the population. In some countries, such as Bahamas and Haiti, this exceeds 4%.
