German rise in colonoscopies curbs intestinal cancer

Executive Summary

Since colonoscopy was introduced as a reimbursable procedure in Germany at ten year - intervals for people over the age of 56 last year, there has been an increase of 30% in procedures carried out. The colonoscopies are leading to "an impressive reduction" in the number of deaths resulting from intestinal cancer, said Wolff Schmiegel, director of the Medical University Clinic of Bochum and vice-chairman of the medical advisory council of German Cancer Aid (DKH).
