1.3 million women of all ages were screened in England in the year to the end of March 2002 under the national breast screening programme, according to statistics released today (February 27 2003) by the Department of Health. Among these, 8,545 cases of cancer were diagnosed. The invitation acceptance rate was 76% of women aged 50-64 years, with 58 of the 99 health authorities reporting rates of at least 70%, (three less than at the end of March 2001). 69.8% of women aged 50-64 had been screened at least once in the previous three years, down marginally from 70.2% one year earlier.
