Executive Summary
The European Commission plans to launch next year a European health card, which will ultimately act as an electronic "smart" card, containing each citizen's medical profile, and will be readable by computer. The Commission proposes to launch the card in its most basic form, as a European health insurance card, on June 1 2004. It will replace all current paper forms, such as E111, necessary for a temporary stay in another member state.
