Executive Summary
The Portuguese health ministry has approved the reimbursement of "swallowable capsule" endoscopy, when performed in public hospitals. On March 1 2003, Portugal becomes the first country in the European Union to do so. The move has been welcomed by the Portuguese Society of Digestive Endoscopy (SPED), which believes that it will encourage wider use of this "non-invasive, patient-friendly technique", according to its president, Dr Hermano Gouveia.
