NHSScotland has reported great successes in boosting surgery activity at one hospital following its acquisition by the NHS. The Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank, acquired in June 2002, had performed 2,695 procedures in the interim period to December 31 2002, far exceeding its target of 1,900 and well on course to exceeding its one-year target of 5,000 operations. The hospital performs cardiac surgery, cardiology, orthopaedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology and endoscopy. The hospital, bought for £37.5m ($60m), is undergoing further expansion that is expected to quadruple orthopaedic surgery to 1,200 cases a year. A new endoscopy suite is due to open by the end of this year.
