Executive Summary
Smith & Nephew (S&N) has received US FDA 510(k) clearance for its Achieve brand of computer-assisted instruments and software for improving a surgeon's ability to place an acetabular cup during hip replacement surgery. While the Achieve technology can be used during conventional hip surgery, it also enables total hip replacement surgery through a mini-incision, thereby reducing soft tissue trauma and the long rehabilitation period associated with the procedure, says the company. S&N notes that studies have indicated that as many as two-thirds of all acetabular cups are placed incorrectly and are at increased risk of post-operative dislocation.
