Executive Summary
Geoff Raisman, the retiring head of neurobiology at the UK's National Institute for Medical Research, has been appointed director of the new Spinal Repair Unit, based at the University of Central London's Institute of Neurology. Professor Raisman and his team at the NIMR are accredited with demonstrating, in rats, the capacity of certain transplanted cells to integrate into the tissue of damaged spinal cord and that similar cells are found in the nasal cavity of humans. Human trials of the technique are due to begin at the SRU within three years.
