Executive Summary
The French national medical academy has issued a statement condemning the growing trend of private operators using ultrasound equipment to make pre-birth videos, DVDs or photographs of foetuses. While not saying that there is a medical risk associated with such practice, the academy says that the exposure of the foetus to ultrasound should be limited to that which is medically necessary. "Ultrasound is a medical procedure which is regulated and is carried out for diagnostic or preventative reasons or in conjunction with a therapeutic procedure. It must not be reduced to a photographic or filming session," the organisation has stated.
