The Hong Kong ministry of health is to begin a roving exhibition to increase public awareness and knowledge of cervical screening for cancer and promote women's participation in the cervical screening programme. The exhibition will be run by the ministry's centre for health protection, which launched the screening programme in March this year. Cervical cancer ranks as the fifth most common cancer and the eighth leading cause of cancer deaths amongst women in Hong Kong. In 2001, there were 438 new cases and 128 deaths due to cervical cancer.
