Executive Summary
Israel has a long history of developing sophisticated biomedical equipment, writes Clinica's local correspondent. In the late 1970s, Tel Aviv-based Laser Industries commercialised the first medical laser, and in the early 1980s, another local company, Elscint, was one of the first worldwide to develop a computed tomography scanner and a magnetic resonance imaging system. In 2002, Given Imaging was the first company to receive FDA approval for a miniature camera encased in a swallowable capsule used to diagnose gastro-intestinal disease.
