Executive Summary
Proper selection and use of maternity equipment was put under the spotlight in the UK today with the publication of a report by the Healthcare Commission (CHAI) into four serious incidents at one hospital. "Poorly chosen and wrongly used equipment" was partly to blame for the failings of the New Cross Hospital (Birmingham and Black Country Strategic Health Authority) during January-March 2003. New equipment has been installed and updated good-practice guidance put in place at the hospital, says CHAI, highlighting the drive to reduce high perinatal and infant mortality rates among deprived communities.
