The UK government is urging companies involved in R&D with innovative technologies to use the technology transfer support services of the Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) network. The network of 68 IRCs was created to facilitate innovative technology transfer especially between small and medium-sized companies (SMEs). It spans 30 regions and countries, including the EU, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Switzerland. Life sciences, genetics and biotechnology comprise one of the seven priority themes of the EU's current R&D programme (FP6). The others include nanotechnology and IT.
