Juan Ramon Malagelada Benapres has been appointed president-elect of the United European Gastroenterological Federation (UEGF). The Barcelona-based UEGF represents 16 leading scientific bodies specialising in the diagnosis and care of digestive pathologies and, in turn, the national associations for these, across Europe. Professor Malagelada, who is president of the Spanish digestive pathology society (SEPD), was already secretary general of the UEGF. His rival final candidate was Professor Christopher Hawkey, co-director of the Institute of Clinical Research Wolfson Digestive Diseases Centre, in Nottingham, UK.
