Executive Summary
April 1 marked the launch of the Healthcare Commission, as the regulator of the NHS and private health services in England and Wales. The formally-named Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection (known as "new CHAI"), replaces the Commission for Health Improvement (or "old CHI"). The Healthcare Commission will be the "new voice on the state of the NHS", but gains responsibility for inspecting services also in the private sector, and for providing influential policy-making input on how the entire healthcare industry and its regulation are developed.
