Executive Summary
A new disease management programme (DMP) for the treatment of breast cancer in the German federal state of Baden-Wurrtemberg has received the tacit support of federal health minister Ulla Schmidt. The DMP, the result of an agreement between the Baden-Wurrtemberg hospitals' association, health insurance funds and doctors' association, focuses on offering treatment according to internationally accepted medical guidelines and standards. Ms Schmidt said that the opening of hospitals for outpatient treatment would play an important role in breast cancer care. The federal insurance department, which approves DMPs, has so far given the go-ahead for 186 programmes.
