Executive Summary
Boston Scientific has completed the enrolment phase of a clinical trial to assess stenting together with embolic protection in the treatment of carotid artery disease. The single-arm study, called BEACH, is a prospective, non-randomised trial enrolling 747 patients at 47 sites across the US. It is testing Boston's FilterWire EZ embolic protection system and its carotid Wallstent monorail endoprosthesis in patients who are at high risk for traditional surgery - ie carotid endarterectomy. Both devices are commercially available in Europe and other markets outside the US.
