Research into diabetes will receive Can$6m (US$5m) from the Canadian Diabetes Association this year. Genetic testing of chromosomes to determine if Type 1 diabetes is hereditary is among the topics that will receive funding. Over 2 million Canadians have diabetes and the WHO predicts that 3.5m Canadians will have diabetes by 2030, due to sedentary lifestyles and prolonged life spans. The association has so far spent almost Can$77m over 29 years on research into the disease.
