Confluent spine surgery sealant:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Moving its surgical sealant brand beyond the cranial surgery market, Confluent Surgical has CE-marked for sale in Europe its DuraSeal Xact can now be used in spine applications. The product is indicated for use as an adjunct to standard methods of dural repair, such as sutures, to provide watertight closure during lumbar spine procedures. Around 250,000 lumbar spine operations are performed each year in Europe and it is estimated that there is a 5-10% rate of incidental occurrence of dural tears that lead to cerebrospinal fluid leaks, said the Waltham, Massachusetts firm. DuraSeal is already approved in Europe and in the US for use in cranial surgery.
