Needle collection only partly effective in Angolan Marburg control efforts

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Large numbers of needles and syringes have been collected in Angola following educational campaigns by religious leaders and the Red Cross on the risk of the uncontrolled spread of Marburg haemorrhagic fever. Widespread needle re-use in the home setting is a highly efficient means of transmission of the virus, says the WHO. It notes, however, that needle reuse appears to persist, and says that new foci of infection are occurring within Uige municipality.
